I am 28. White. A Female. And a former Peace Corps Volunteer. I am HIV Positive. This is my story of how a few months, a few people, and a few events in Zambia changed me and my life forever. This is the story of how I contracted HIV and brought my Peace Corps Journey to a crashing halt... and how I am working now to pick up and put back together the pieces of my life as a newly diagnosed person living with HIV. This was not the journey I had originally planned... my path has traumatically and dramatically changed... but it is the one I am on now. There is no going back. There is only forward. I welcome you to follow along with me as I attempt to explore this new life ahead of me, whether you are someone from the Peace Corps community, or someone living with HIV. I welcome your comments, questions, suggestions, and opinions. Let us go forward together. To start from the beginning, click here He Gave Me More Than A Bracelet.

More Good News

Well, I already have more good news to add to my Reinstatement Timeline! I received an e-mail this afternoon from the Zambia Country Desk Officer in D.C. letting me know that the Zambia Country Director has given his approval of my reinstatement request. I am not sure of any additional details yet, like whether or not that means they agree that I could go in August... but I'll try to get more details in the coming days...

Now that the Country Director has given his approval, my case is officially passed to the Medical Office in D.C., and we wait for them to (hopefully) clear me for service. I'll contact them this week to get more information about what all they will need from me for this process.

P.S.... I went to speak at another high school today. We spoke to two health classes (equaling a total of about 35 kids). It went really well. I especially enjoyed the first class and all of their enthusiasm, interest, questions, and genuine concern :-)

  1. WOW, Jess! I can only imagine the fun you & Sharon would have together. Re-doing PST hasn't been nearly the traumatic experience I imagined. It's actually been quite liberating already having a sense of what's going on. And what a cool opportunity to share your experience/be proactive in the meantime. You have so much to offer, even if only to a few. I'm looking forward to the updates! Keep pressing on.
