I am 28. White. A Female. And a former Peace Corps Volunteer. I am HIV Positive. This is my story of how a few months, a few people, and a few events in Zambia changed me and my life forever. This is the story of how I contracted HIV and brought my Peace Corps Journey to a crashing halt... and how I am working now to pick up and put back together the pieces of my life as a newly diagnosed person living with HIV. This was not the journey I had originally planned... my path has traumatically and dramatically changed... but it is the one I am on now. There is no going back. There is only forward. I welcome you to follow along with me as I attempt to explore this new life ahead of me, whether you are someone from the Peace Corps community, or someone living with HIV. I welcome your comments, questions, suggestions, and opinions. Let us go forward together. To start from the beginning, click here He Gave Me More Than A Bracelet.

Reinstatement Timeline

Date
Event
March 18, 2012
I sent an e-mail to fellow PCVs and Supervisors informing them of my desire to reinstate and asking them to consider writing a letter of support for me, which I would include with my reinstatement request.
March 23, 2012
I sent an e-mail to my International Health Coordinator in D.C. asking her how long the Medical Office would like me to maintain an Undetectable Viral Load and a CD4 >500.
March 27, 2012
I received an e-mail back from my International Health Coordinator stating that the Medical Office supports my decision to reinstate and would grant me Medical Clearance if I can maintain the above mentioned lab results through June of 2012.
April 13, 2012
I sent an e-mail to the Zambia Country Desk Officer in D.C. informing her of my desire to start the reinstatement process. I attached my official reinstatement request (read my reinstatement request here), and I also included a document containing 5 letters written by others in support of my reinstatement.
April 16, 2012
I received a positive e-mail back from the Zambia Country Desk Officer in D.C. stating that she will forward all of the documents to the Zambia Country Director (in Lusaka, Zambia) and discuss it with him. If the Zambia Country Director approves, then it will be officially passed to the Medical Office for Clearance.
April 24, 2012
I received an e-mail from the Zambia Country Desk Officer in D.C. letting me know that the Zambia Country Director has given his approval for my reinstatement. This is a HUGE step! Now, we wait for clearance from Medical.
May 27, 2012
I decided that it was best that I not reinstate and return to Zambia. I am concerned about my health and the extra risks I would face back in Africa. I withdraw my application for reinstatement.

  2. Hi! Thanks so much for opening up to us strangers and sharing this blog. I was wondering if you were still looking to rejoin PC, or how your timeline has been going in the last few months? It would be amazing if you were able to get reinstated, best of luck with everything!
